It was towards the end of WW1 when the armies realized they need to advance their tactics.
Trench Warfare is type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other. The trenches were made in order to protect themselves from the artillery. The front trenches were used for fighting and hiding, and the back trenches were used for the armies to rest and for medical purposes. A disadvantage to this was diseases spread everywhere, and there were lots of rats surrounding them.
Artillery Barrage: Artillery Barrage is when very heavy artillery is fired at and opponent's target constantly for a long period of time. Their tactic was for the troops would fire constantly until the enemy decides to surrender. This tactic was very effective because it messed up the enemy's plane and postponed their movements. This forced the enemy to surrender because the longer they wait, the less people they have. However, it was worthless because when it came to large areas because they had to target at one place.
By the end of the war the military learned they should advance their tactics and be more advance. Everything they had were too original to the point where the enemy expected most of the things they do. For example, instead of attacking at night, which was overused during wars, they wanted to attack at the most unexpected time.

Fighting took place overseas, but Britain had control of the sea. India had the manpower that Britain lacked. Since the other colonies were small it was easier for them to take over. It took only up to 1917 for all of the German forces in Africa to surrender.
